Muscular System Notes
-The bones & joints of the skeletal system must work with the Muscular system to allow Movement.
The muscular system provides the Force needed to move the Bones of the skeletal system.
The human body has about 600 muscles that are responsible for all of the body’s movements… inside & out.
Involuntary Muscles are not under your control… you don’t have to think about them.
Blinking, breathing, Digestion & heartbeat
Voluntary Muscles are muscles under your control…
smiling, writing, Biking & skateboarding
3 types of muscle tissue…
Skeletal Muscle=> striated (banded) Skeletal muscles move Bones.
Work in pairs… Flexors contract to bend a joint while the Extensors allow a joint to straighten.
Muscles are Attached to bone by strong connective tissue called Tendons. Muscle is meat… like chicken tenders so think TENDON is like TENDERS & that connects bone to muscle
Skeletal muscles react quickly & tire quickly. Voluntary & Involuntary
Smooth Muscle Smooth muscle controls movement of Internal Organs …moves food through digestive system, lines the blood vessels, bladder and reproductive organs.
Smooth muscles react slowly & tire slowly. Smooth muscle=> involuntary
Cardiac Musclesstriated Cardiac muscle is found only in the Heart & controls the contractions of the heart muscles that cause our Heartbeat.
Cardiac muscle does not tire easily. Cardiac muscle=> involuntary
Muscle cells do increase in size so that the thicker the muscle is, the stronger it is.
Muscular strength & flexibility may be maintained by Stretching (warming up) & regular exercise.
Cramps occur when the entire muscle contracts & stays contracted. (ex: Charley horse) (USE HEAT)
Pulled or strained muscles occur when the muscle is overworked or overstretched. (USE ICE)
