What is Muscle Reading? Ø Muscle Reading is a three-phase technique that one can use to accomplish information extraction. Each phase of the three phases has three steps.
What is one way to remember all nine steps? Ø One way to remember all nine steps is to memorize the following three short sentences: l l l Pry out questions Root up answers. Recite, review, and review again. Ø These sentences are an acrostic. The first letter of each word stands for one Muscle Reading process.

Step 2 Outline Ø Amount of time on this step will vary Ø Complex material take time to understand structure Ø Study textbook chapter outlines Ø If not textbook chapter outlines make one Ø Section titles/paragraph headlines serve major/minor topics outline Ø Outlining makes complex information easier to understand
Step 3 Question Ø Ask yourself what you want from an assignment before you begin Ø Write down a list of questions Ø Turn chapter headings and section titles into questions Ø Purpose of asking questions is to get your brain involved Ø Questions formulated help you stay alert during difficult reading
Step 4 Read Ø Begin reading Ø Be with your reading in the now Ø Avoid marathon reading sessions Ø For difficult reading set shorter goals Ø Visualize the material Ø Read it aloud Ø Do not read in bed
Step 5 Underline Ø Use your text books Ø Making marks in a textbook creates signals for reviewing Ø Being physical with your books builds strong neural pathways Ø Underline only what is important Ø Underline sparingly less than 10 percent Ø Write in the margins of the text summary statements/questions
Step 6 Answer Ø Read get answers to your questions write them down fill outline
Step 7 Recite Ø Talk to yourself/friend about what you had read Ø Find a friend and teach your friend and have your friend teach you
Step 8 Review Ø Completely review within 24 hours so information will go from short term memory to long term memory Ø During review look over your notes clear up points Ø Recite main points Ø Relearn material
Step 9 Review again Ø Weekly or monthly review Ø Review using 3 by 5 cards Ø Reread difficult assignments Ø Schedule some review periods in advance Ø Keep your reviews short and do reviews often Ø Develop a habit of regular reviews
