Introduction/Context · MAP (Muon Accelerator Program) is a national program to determine the feasibility of neutrino factories and lepton colliders based on muon storage rings. · MASS (Muon Accelerator Staging Strategies) is a working group set up by Mark Palmer, head of MAP. Its charge is to explore ways to stage muon facilities that would mesh with a staged upgrade of proton accelerator facilities at Fermilab (Project X). · Plan A: How MAP/MASS views nu. STORM as proposed. · Ideally, each step in an optimal staging strategy would not only provide compelling particle physics results but would also allow testing of some of the technology required for subsequent steps. Nu. STORM as proposed satisfies this criterion. · nu. STORM would be an important first step to: · Demonstrate the utility of a muon storage ring for neutrino physics, · Allow development and demonstration of some of the necessary technology for muon storage rings, · Provide a potentially useful muon test beam , and · Build some equipment that could be reused in later stages. Muons, Inc. Plan B: a shotgun marriage with Nu. MAX · Question: What should we do if nu. STORM is not funded? · MASS Answer: Arrange a shotgun marriage with Nu. MAX. · Nu. MAX is a proposed long-baseline neutrino experiment based on a 5 -Ge. V ring that stores intense, cold muon beams. The detector would be in South Dakota. · The storage ring would be situated so that the straight sections are also aligned with a nu. STORM detector for short-baseline physics, and with a baseline appropriate for a 5 -Ge. V muon beam. · One concept: a “bent paper clip” with vertical bends in the straight sections so that part of the st. section is horizontal, part is tilted. · This form of nu.
