Muon detection, towards societal applications of MPGD Þ Thanks to organizers and city mayor! Sébastien Procureur
FEATURES OF COSMIC MUONS • • • Free (already a good point at that time) Natural Continuous radiation Highly penetrating Propagating along straight lines (on average) • Hidden chambers in pyramids (Alvarez, 1970) • Volcanology (Tanaka, Diaphane collaboration) |2
2 D MUOGRAPHY AND MPGD AT SACLAY If 50 cm long telescope… Scintillator (~1 cm resolution) Micromegas (0. 3 mm resolution) Þ Revolution for precise imaging • Wat. To exp. already elicited interests from IAEA and French Interior Ministry • Other applications in archeological or mining prospections: tumulus cavity in soil mining cf ASACUSA |3
BEYOND MUOGRAPHY: 3 D TOMOGRAPHY • Direct application for homeland security (Los Alamos, 2003) Þ Many projects in UK, Italy, Canada, China, Russia, France, Israel, … |4
3 D TOMOGRAPHY AND MPGD AT SACLAY Performance with compact (50 cm between detectors) setup 1 st goal of DNDO for detection of 4 kg of U in 2016… First test on a small part with Lead brick, simple POCA Detection in 2’ possible …today Þ New applications for precise imaging are now emerging if longer exposure… thanks to spatial |5 resolution of MPGD
3 D TOMOGRAPHY WITH LONGER EXPOSURE Pliers Limestone Wood board! Lead brick Iron structure in the limestone (from Historic Monuments) Not neutrons, not X-rays… just free muons! And with compact, transportable setup |6
MUON METROLOGY Muon metrology, e. g. deformation measurement of buildings But can it work with (necessarily) compact instruments? |7
MUON METROLOGY • • Buildings in cities (old careeers, metro tunnels, vibrations, …) Old monuments on unstable ground Hydro dams Bridge (road, pillars) Tunnel construction (localization) Landslide … Elicited interests from several civil engineering companies |8
CONCLUSION Development of muon telescopes at Saclay with unprecedented resolution → → using genetic multiplexing => low consumption, cheap, transportable, autonomous without external trigger (DREAM auto-trigger function) These instruments have lots of applications, existing or new → muography: 10 -50 times better resolutions than existing telescopes → tomography: very compact instruments, transportable for in situ experiments → metrology: can now reach positioning at 20 -40 m distance, even with obstacles Elicited many interests in different fields, from government to industry There is a lot to do, and we are of course open to collaborations! |9
ADDENDUM: GENETIC MULTIPLEXING WITH PIXELS Genetic multiplexing presented in 3 rd MPGD conference (Zaragoza) questions whether it can be extended to 2 D (pixels) → fully isotropic, no unfavoured direction → but virtually impossible to make connections with electronics! | 11
ADDENDUM: GENETIC MULTIPLEXING WITH PIXELS • A practical solution is to multiplex on the basis of 2 prime numbers p and q l: returning strip pitch (~0. 2 mm) px: pixel pitch along one direction | 12
ADDENDUM: GENETIC MULTIPLEXING WITH PIXELS • Example with 1 and 2 track events (color is time) (NB: as in 1 D, the degree of multiplexing can be adjusted to the flux) | 13
