Process of Mummification • 1. The inner organs are removed. The brain is removed through the nose and discarded. The other organs, excluding the heart are put in canopic jars. • 2. The body is filled with natron, placed on a slanted table, and allowed to dry for 40 days.
Process - continued • 3. The natron is removed, the body is rubbed with lotions, and it is packed with linen. • 4. A patch of Horus’ eye is sewn over the only incision. • 5. The body is wrapped in 20 layers of linen with jewels and amulets placed in each layer. It is glued together with a sticky substance called resin.
The Funeral • After 100 days, the body is ready to be placed in the tomb. • Death masks, usually of wood or solid gold, are placed over the head. • The body is pulled by sled as paid mourners cry and thrown dust up in the air.
