Assignment 4: Lightweight and stability of an undamaged ship
Ships lightweight • • • Weight of the steel structure • • Can be estimated from hull structure plans NAPA Steel gives an estimation to compare with the hand calculations Weight of large components • • Main engines and propulsion pods – weight known Crane, lifts, and other heavy components need to checked Weight of the outfitting components • An estimation of these will be carried out
Weight calculations • After weight estimation done, the estimation for the center of the gravity • Both longitudinal and transversal centers of gravity • Comparing the LW and Co. G to existing similar ships • Some reserve needs to be for both lightweight and CG • Too low center of gravity is not a problem
Stability of an undamaged ship • Once the weight and center of gravity are determined the initial calculation fot he undamaged ship can be done by calculating the metacentric height GM • Other stability curves?
Schedule and work breakdown • Start of work by calculating the steel weight and it’s center of gravity • Comparing the results with reference ships • Finally the initial stability calculations
