FOOD CALCULATIONS OF MEB Food Amount: The food minimum expenditure basket was defined and calculated based on the formula adopted by WFP [1] in Lebanon for the Syrian refugee response in 2014[2] based on the preference of different types of food items to meet their daily nutritional and energy requirement. Similarly, the quantity/portion of food items was calculated based on the Sphere Project Standards for the daily energy requirement of 2, 100 kcal person per day. The following table and figures present the composition of a preferred food basket, the daily energy requirement and the daily recommended ration person per day and the price of food items based on the market information. Caloric needs for children range from 1000 -2, 200 depending on age thus the calculation for a family of 5 is calculated at a ratio of total caloric needs when estimated that there are 3 children per family. Table 1: Composition of preferred food basket, amounts required and price per ration. COSTS TO COVER FOOD • 5. 6 – 7 EUR person per DAY for food = 7. 6 – 9 million per month (reduce to remove islands) • Plus additional resources for project management, delivery and financial service providers • Community kitchen costs TBC ? Using DRC and UNHCR $ planning figures • MEB Food = 91. 5 EUR per individual/ 320 EUR per family of 5/ 388 EUR per family of 7 • ECHO, DFID, other donors interested?
YEARLY PLANNING FIGURES + CONTINGENCY • 140 EUR (MEB per individual) x 55, 000 (people) x 12 (months) = 92. 4 million • 140 EUR x 100, 000 (contingency) x 12 = 168 million • 450 EUR (MEB per household of 5) x 11, 000 (families) x 12 (months) = 59. 4 million • 450 EUR x 20, 000 (contingency) x 12 = 108 million • 450 x 25, 000 (contingency) x 12 = 135 million 5 things to consider: 1. These amounts do not include a revised portion for food (91 EUR/ person/ month might be low) 2. These amounts do not include shelter (which might need to be considered for urban cases) 3. These amounts do not include transfer/ delivery costs or management of programming/ monitoring etc 4. These amounts do not assume that UNHCR would cover 100% needs but that it would be shared with other agencies 5. These amounts assume every individual would receive cash and that no livelihoods activities are allowed.
