Repeated Addition Multiplication is repeated addition. For example, 3 x 3 : 3+3+3 =9 so, 3 x 3=9 The first number tells you how many time to add the second number. • Example 2 4 x 5 = 5+5+5+5 4 x 5=20

Grouping a certain number of groups of the same size. So 3 x 3 is 3 groups of 3 So, then you add the 3 groups of 3 (3+3+3) which is the same as 3 x 3= 9 • 2 x 5 is 2 groups of 5 So, the you add the 2 groups of 5 (5+5) which is the same as 2 x 5=10

Arrays An array is one group with columns and rows. • Rows go across from left to right and columns go up and down. So 6 x 3 has 6 rows with 3 object in each row. You can the objects one by one or use repeated addition (3+3+3+3) So, 6 x 3=18 • Example 2: 2 x 5 there are 2 rows with 5 objects in it. Again you can count each object or use repeated addition (5+5) So, 2 x 5=10
