Multiple Intelligences Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University T
Multiple Intelligences • In 1983, Howard Gardner of Harvard University published a book called Frames of Mind in which the traditional view of a fixed intelligence (such as the ability to use language or do mathematics) was replaced with theory of “multiple intelligences. ” Dr. Gardner and his colleagues defined intelligence as “competence in problem solving and creativity” skill in “resolving genuine problems or difficulties, ” “creating effective products, ” and “finding or creating new problems” to solve. T
Multiple Intelligences • Gardner identified eight criteria for the existence of the separate intelligences. He grouped the intelligences into three categories: language-related (verbal/linguistic and musical/rhythmic), described as “object free” personal forms (interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences, essential in communication) object-related (bodily/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, and logical/mathematical) T
Multiple Intelligences • Dr. Gardner and colleagues are continuing this work, identifying other talents and intelligences, opening the door to understanding both potential and motivation. His newest work identifies the “naturalist” as an eighth intelligence. He is also looking at a potential ninth intelligence of existential intelligence, the ability to conceptualize deeper questions, such as the meaning of life. T
