Multiple Intelligences BY ASHLEY ELY
Howard Gardner’s Seven Multiple Intelligences Howard Gardner of Harvard has identified seven distinct intelligences. These intelligences determine how we think, act, and react to certain situations. He states that there is not only one way to learn, but many. According to Gardner (1991), "we are all able to know the world through language, logicalmathematical analysis, spatial representation, musical thinking, the use of the body to solve problems or to make things, an understanding of other individuals, and an understanding of ourselves. Where individuals differ is in the strength of these intelligences - the so-called profile of intelligences -and in the ways in which such intelligences are invoked and combined to carry out different tasks, solve diverse problems, and progress in various domains. "
First intelligence--Visual-Spatial - this is the type of intelligence typically seen with architects and sailors. Usually always aware of their surroundings. They often like to draw, participate in puzzles, and are good at reading maps. They learn best through drawings, verbal and physical imagery. Examples of imagery they use are models, charts, photographs, drawings, 3 D modeling, and multimedia.
Second Intelligence– Bodily- Kinesthetic Bodily-kinesthetic - This intelligence usually refers to someone who is often very aware of their body, and the use of it. Possibly a dancer or even a surgeon. Often enjoying movement, and touching of other things. They often have strong body communication. Their best learning method usually consists of hands on, and using physical objects.
Third Intelligence-- Musical - this type of intelligence refers to those who have a great sense of rhythm and sensitivity to sound. They can apply this skill not only to music, but the sounds found in their surroundings. These skills can be used by writing lyrics, singing, or even just tapping in time to music.
Fourth Intelligence-- Interpersonal - This type of intelligence individuals are usually very strong with interactions, and communication. Often consisting of many friends, and usually being strong participators in group activity's. They enjoy using the telephone, and often communicating with others through email as well.
Fifth Intelligence-- Intrapersonal - This intelligence is usually someone who is very self aware of themselves, wants, and personal needs. Often keeping to oneself. Often very aware of feelings. Can be confident, and sometimes opinionated. Their best method of learning is through personal challenges and growth. They often enjoy learning in an environment where one can study on their own.
Sixth Intelligence-- Linguistic - This type of intelligence is often used to individuals who use words effectively. Also having strong auditory skills. Enjoy reading, writing and even games that use those methods. They often like to read, and become more aware of different words, and the meaning, and usage of the word.
Seventh Intelligence-- Logical Mathematical Logical -Mathematical - This intelligence is often defined to those who are very well at calculating. These individuals are often very good at solving puzzles, and even relationships. They enjoy asking many questions, and learning new things daily. They are more interested in the concept of the overall thing rather then the thing itself.
So in conclusion Howard Gardner explains the different types of intelligence through different individuals. Each individual has a different way of learning, and is intelligent in a different way. Their is an intelligence for each individual with some falling into more then category there is often a direct intelligence for everyone.
