HOOK: THINK OF A TIME WHEN YOU WERE REJECTED v How did it feel? v Draw how you felt (in two minutes) v Stick your drawings on the wall closest to you (nobody cares what they look like… you’ll see one of my drawings later…)

READ “POEM FOR MY MOTHER” BY JENNIFER DAVIDS TO YOURSELF

A QUICK SURFACE READING v. How can various multimodal sources aid in creating a deeper meaning?

Poem for my Mother That isn’t everything, you said on the afternoon I brought a poem to you hunched over the washtub with your hands the shrivelled. burnt granadilla skin of your hands covered by foam. And my words slid like a ball of hard blue soap into the tub to be grabbed and used by you to rub the clothes. A poem isn’t all there is to life, you said. with your blue-ringed gaze scanning the page once looking over my shoulder and back at the immediate dirty water. and my words being clenched smaller and smaller

A DEEPER READING v. How can various multimodal sources aid in understanding how themes of the poem is represented culturally?

CULTURAL ISSUES v. Cultural representation in “general” internet sources… watch out! v. YOUR interests accidentally dominating searches v. Connecting with a wide range of your learners’ prior experiences

REFLECT ON… v. Driving the learning experience of the self and the other to a conclusion… v…and connecting with inclusion…

NEXT CLASS &CHALLENGE v. You will be designing your own multimodal lesson plans and presenting them in groups v. Challenge: create a multimodal lesson plan using an interactive whiteboard or/and i. Pad apps and present it to during a consultation with one of the facilitators v. Please remember to hand in your notes of this class
