Multi-Genre Project Real-World Writings

What is Real-world Writing? �Writing that is intended to inform an audience about a subject or topic that the audience needs or wants to know more about. �A style of writing that you will use often outside of the classroom.

Resume (1 page) � Resumes must include the following parts: Heading (name, address, phone number, email address) Education (Include all degrees as well as the names and locations of the schools in which they were received from the most to least recent) Experience (Include any jobs, volunteer activities, or leadership roles) Special interests (foreign languages, diverse life experiences)

Letter (1 page) � Types of letters include: Persuasive: used to persuade a person, company, organization, etc. , into an action of some sort. Complaint: used to lodge a complaint about a product or service. Application: used to introduce yourself to a company or organization in the application of the job. Friendly: used for friends, acquaintances, pen pals, etc. Thank you: thanks someone for services received, gifts, etc.

Memo �A memo is a short note written as a reminder, often used in office settings. �Contains the header: To: From: Date: Subject �Followed by a brief message.

News Report �A short account of recent events, usually contains interviews from experts or eye witnesses. �Factual and avoids the author’s opinion.

News Article �Must be 2 -columns, single-spaced with a picture or graphic.

Review �A review is a written opinion of what you think of something. �Types of reviews: Book reviews Movie reviews Music reviews Television reviews Event reviews Etc.

Written Speech � A speech is a piece of writing that is written with the intention of being spoken out loud to a group of people. � Your speech can be either informative or persuasive. Informative: Intended to share new ideas and build perceptions. Give the audience members a new understanding or new appreciation of some topic with which they might be familiar but unaware of recent developments. Persuasive: Asks the audience to take action in support of a certain view. Speaker should urge the audience to consider why one side of an issue is worth supporting emotionally, and logically, and then tell them what action they can take to make that support real.

Instructional Manual �A list of instructions in which you explain step by step how to complete a task. �Often used to teach someone how to build or use something.
