Course Objectives 1. Encourage the respect toward others who differ in ethnicity, religion, race, political views, beliefs, ideology, and worldviews. 2. Encourage self-exploration and challenge ones personal social and cultural filters. 3. Demonstrate a general command of multiple approaches and ways to assist a diverse clientele.

Method of Instruction This course is taught in a seminar format within the principles

Method of Instruction This course is taught in a seminar format within the principles of cultural immersion in the country of Guatemala. There will be a series of trips to experience the contextual reality of the locals and the differences in cultures between the U. S. and Guatemala. Students/participants will develop a series of workshops devised to empower local populations using the format of International Service Learning. All participants MUST participate in all the orientations pre-trip relative to rules, UNI standards of professional conduct, consumption of alcohol and illegal substance, cultural respect, and safety issues. Various Spanish language immersion activities will be conducted. Participants will provide International Service activities in which orientation workshops are facilitated for the local teachers, human service community leaders, and school children at the Universidad del Valle and surrounding areas.
