“MULTICULTURAL COMMUNICATION: BREAKING STEREOTYPES” Local and national Traditional Polish dances „THE POLONAISE”
Polonez /The Polonaise Pochodzenie: Podobnie jak inne tańce ludowe był on początkowo tanecznym odbiciem ówczesnego życia i panujących zwyczajów. Początkowo tańczony był wyłącznie przez mężczyzn, później dołączyły do tańca kobiety. Z czasem polonez ludowy przeobraził się w taniec towarzyski i przybrał charakter reprezentacyjnego pochodu uczestników balu. Origin The polonaise used to be a dance reflecting contemporary life and traditions, similarly to other folk dances. At the beginning, only men danced it but later women also joined in. With the passing of time the polonaise transformed from a folk to ballroom dance and became a kind of representative procession of dancers at a ball.

Nature of the Dance The polonaise is a group dance. To look good and run smoothly, it should be conducted by an experienced dance leader. The polonaise has the nature of a solemn procession which expresses the dignity and national pride of the Poles. The men's behaviour should be characterized by chivalry, the women in turn should carry themselves proudly.
