WHAT IS MULTICULTURISM ? Multiculturalism describes the existence, acceptance and promotion of Multiple cultural traditions within a single jurisdiction. Multiculturalism claims that different traditions and cultures can enrich society.
WHAT IS MULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM? A Multicultural classroom is one in which both the students and the teacher are accepting of all races, cultures, and religions. This acceptance is evidenced by the books that are read, the activities that are completed, and the lessons that are taught. Mary Dilg says in his book “Thriving in the Multicultural classroom”“Understanding and supporting a legitimate share and shifting nature of authority in the multicultural classroom can assist us in working effectively with our student”.
ROLE OF LANGUAGE IN A MULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM: Language is an important cultural cum communicational tool for any student. With the help of language and the style of pronunciation, the personality of a students grows. In this type of classroom, students come from different cultural backgrounds and so their mother tongue differs from others. Due to the diversity of language or language variations in such a classroom, students get to learn various other languages except their mother language and thus inspires others to learn more than one language.
FEATURES/CHARACTERISTICS OF A MULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM: 1. This type of classroom builds the idea of national and international integrity. 2. In a Multicultural classroom, as we all know, that students come from different(various) class, culture, religion, race and sexual orientation, their mental ability, interest and knowledge naturally varies. Thus a wonderful and a different learning process develops in the classroom. 3. Coexistence of pupil of various cultures helps them to understand respect each other’s religion and culture.

ADVANTAGES OF MULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM: � Diversity of culture in a multicultural classroom enhances human integrity. � Multicultural classroom enhances the patience and sympathy of one people towards the other of different culture and religion. � In this type of classroom, the students gather a modern and huge knowledge in science and technology. � Beyond religious and cultural barriers, pupil can think freely and they get the opportunity of maintaining mental freedom and diversity.
DISADVANTAGE OF MULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM � Lack of proper infrastructure may give rise to diversity instead of unity. � In this type of classroom, as we all know, students come from various culture so language diversity arises and sometime it spoil the teaching and learning process. � The biggest disadvantage of teaching in a multicultural classroom is student’s family. � It can become an extremely difficult feat for educators trying to teach such a diverse population of students and training alone may not be enough.
ROLE OF TEACHERMULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM: The main target of Multicultural classroom is to create unity in diversity. In this type of classroom, teacher plays the ingredient role in imparting lessons to the students. The teachers who adopt the class diversity very easily can provide a successful teaching to his pupil in the multicultural classroom. Teacher should be free-minded and have a friendly approach towards students.
To make a multicultural classroom successful, a teacher should follow the following responsibilities: 1. Identification of diverse classroom. 2. Awareness of learning style. 3. Resource of communication. 4. Diversity awareness activity. 5. Non-partiality class teaching.
CONCLUSION � An emphasis of multicultural activities across the curriculum can help improve positive socialization behaviours among children. �A sound Multicultural education model manifests an acceptance of a respect for all cultures in our pluralistic society. � The principles of multicultural education promotes close working relationship among the school, home and community.
