Multicellular Organisms

Multicellular Organisms made up of many cells Examples: Humans Plants Animals Bugs/Insects Etc.

Cell Specialization A single cell from a multicellular organism CANNOT survive on its own

Cell Specialization A single cell from a multicellular organism CANNOT survive on its own Ex: If we took a skin cell, blood cell, plant cell, etc. it would not be able to do all the life functions within itself therefore cannot survive as a single cell Multicellular organisms have differentiated specialized cells (cont. on next page)

Cell Specialization Differentiated = Different Specialized = Special Functions= Jobs So when we say

Cell Specialization Differentiated = Different Specialized = Special Functions= Jobs So when we say a multicellular organism cells has “differentiated specialized functions” it simply means each type of cell does different and special jobs

Cell Specialization Each of these cells have a different structure (shape) Each carry out

Cell Specialization Each of these cells have a different structure (shape) Each carry out different functions (jobs) Each cell is differentiated and specialized to do those jobs They all need each others help to survive as an organism they cannot survive alone

Cell Specialization This is one reason that multicellular organisms have a longer life span

Cell Specialization This is one reason that multicellular organisms have a longer life span (can live longer) They share the workload They all have a part in doing one of the 7 basic needs of life

Cell Specialization Does a single celled organism need specialized cells?

Cell Specialization Does a single celled organism need specialized cells?

Cell Specialization Does a single celled organism need specialized cells? NO! Because they can

Cell Specialization Does a single celled organism need specialized cells? NO! Because they can do all life processes within ONE single cell

Think about it… If cells need to breathe and get nutrients how do our

Think about it… If cells need to breathe and get nutrients how do our liver cells get oxygen and nutrients? Brainstorm with a partner

Transport Systems We get oxygen from the air around us and we get nutrients

Transport Systems We get oxygen from the air around us and we get nutrients from eating food Both of those come from our external environment (the environment around us on the outside) Once they enter our body they have to be transported to all of our cells inside our body- this is called a TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Transport Systems Multicellular organisms NEED transport systems because their internal cells are too far

Transport Systems Multicellular organisms NEED transport systems because their internal cells are too far away from the external environment to exchange substance (such as oxygen and nutrients) ALL multicellular organisms need a transport system meaning humans, plants, animals, bug, the tiniest of insects, etc.

Transport Systems Let’s think about this now… Do single celled organisms need a transport

Transport Systems Let’s think about this now… Do single celled organisms need a transport system? Have a reason to why or why not.

Transport Systems Unicellular organisms do NOT needs a transport system Because… They are in

Transport Systems Unicellular organisms do NOT needs a transport system Because… They are in contact with the external environment on ALL sides—so there is no need to have to transport oxygen and nutrients around the organism (it’s just ONE cell) Touching external environment on all sides
