Here is an old growth forest preserve located in Maine. Notice the fallen trees, should they be left alone or cleaned out by man? If so, why do you think so? Think about why old growth forests are now being protected before you answer.
There are may pine trees in this old growth forest. They are estimated to be over 200 years old. Some of these trees are over 100 feet tall. Trees of various heights create the canopy within this forest. You can see that there are other species of trees in this picture.
Here is a picture across from the protected area of Mullen woods. The lightness in the background is from an area that loggers cut down trees. Do you think that loggers should be able to cut down trees in and around old growth forests? Why or why not?
Here is a section of the preserve where you can see sunlight shining through to the forest floor. You can also see shadows on the forest floor. What are the benefits to the forest for this type of lighting?
There is fern and other growth on the outer side of the old growth forest. You will notice a tree that has a sign on it. What do you think the sign says? From what you have learned about old growth forests explain your answer.
A couple of fallen trees on the edge of the Mullen Preserve. Does it benefit the forest if man leaves them alone? What about its cosmetic value? Should man clean it up?
