MUDDY MATS STEM DAY R BROWN MCALLISTER SECOND
MUDDY MATS STEM DAY @ R. BROWN MCALLISTER- SECOND GRADE
OUR OBJECTIVES Science 2. P. 2. Understand properties of solids and liquids and the changes they undergo. Writing W. 2. 2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
You have always wanted a dog, and today just might be your chance! It is raining outside, and there is a stray dog just hanging around in your yard getting all wet. You want to bring him inside, but can you take that risk? If the dog gets the floor wet, there is no way you’ll be able to keep him. How can you make a door mat that will soak up the water dripping from his body so that just maybe this dog can stay forever?
What I Know What I Need to Know
To solve our problem we must identify the properties of water and of a good door mat. What are properties? Click on the door mat to find out more!
HOW MANY PROPERTIES OF EACH CAN YOU THINK OF? Water A Good Door Mat
DID YOU THINK OF SOME OF THESE PROPERTIES? Water A Good Door Mat üfeels wet üsoaks up water ücan pour üisn’t slippery üdoes not have its own shape üwill not leak üparticles attract ümight be pretty ünecessary for life ülong-lasting (strong)
YOUR TASK • Determine which materials you think will make the best door mat. • Make a door mat prototype. It must have these properties. üSoaks up water (at least 2 tablespoons) üDoes not leak üDoes not slide on the floor You may use no more than 3 layers. You may choose to decorate your door mat after you test it.
Use the Design Cycle to plan your mat. Make sure to begin with a labeled sketch.
TEST YOUR MAT Does it soak up water? 1. Put a paper towel on the tray. 2. Place your mat on the paper towel. 3. Pour 2 tablespoons of water on your mat and observe. Where does the water go? Does it leak? 1. Is the paper towel wet or dry? Does it slide on the floor? 1. Can you push it easily across the floor?
Use the Design Cycle to improve your mat.
YOUR FINAL TASK When your mat is finished, create an advertisement for your door mat so that others will want to buy it. Include the price and describe at least 3 properties that make it a good door mat. This is an individual assignment.
HOW DID YOU DO TODAY? My doormat absorbed all the water. My doormat did not leak. My doormat did not slide. I collaborated with my team. I created an advertisement with a price and 3 properties of my door mat.
