Message 1 A Complete Census Count is about Montana Getting Our Fair Share!
In 2015, 132 federal programs used Census Bureau data to distribute $675 billion dollars to states and programs That’s almost $7 trillion in federal funding over the decade
From the 16 largest federal funding programs, in a single year, Montana received $2. 05 billion in federal funding based on our state’s Census data (Source Study George Washington University: Counting for Dollars 2020)
Over a decade, that is almost $20, 000 for each Montana Resident (Source Study George Washington University: Counting for Dollars 2020 – funds/ 2015 population = $1, 989. 20 person per year)
When Everyone Isn’t Counted Either The Programs Get Less or Montana Taxpayers Pay the Difference Example Child Care Mandatory and Matching Funds of the Child Care and Development Fund - ACF/93. 596 Eligible states are allocated matching funds based upon the number of children under age 13 in a state compared with the national total of children under the age of 13.
Let’s use this room as a portrait of Montana. For each person that is counted, Montana will receive $20, 000 in federal funding for the decade. Any math or economics majors in the room? But we have to be counted to get our fair share.
Message 2 A Complete Count is Not a Piece of Cake (or a small tomato)
In the 2010 Census, Montana had a slight OVERCOUNT of 0. 65% ranking us 11 th of states in accuracy. Our official total resident population was 989, 415. We passed the million mark sometime in 2012 and are growing at about 1% a year.
Dakotas Montana HOWEVER - in 2000, Montana was not a Census star. Our undercount of more than 14, 000 ranked us 44 th among states. North Dakota’s undercount was 3 rd lowest in undercount and South Dakota, which has a larger native population than Montana, was 6 th lowest.
A follow-up study by the Census estimated 14, 390 folks living in Montana were missed in 2000. We basically didn’t count anyone within the cities of Glendive and Havre combined.
Message 3 Economic Growth Needs Good Data
Businesses use Census data to help inform business decisions and spur growth. 150, 000 businesses and organizations partnered with the Census to promote the 2010 Census including the Target, Best Buy and Sprint as well as nonprofits like the AARP, the US Chamber, and the NAACP
Funding for services – as determined by the Census – can make a positive impact on the lives of employees, their families and their communities. These services include: Health: hospitals, health centers and community health programs Education: schools, job training, English-language learning programs Transportation: roads, bridges, public transportation Other support: child care and senior centers, cultural programs
The Census count is used for apportionment of the U. S. House of Representatives Where additional seats would have gone in 2010? State | # Seats with Addition North Carolina Seat 14 Missouri Seat 9 New York Seat 28 New Jersey Seat 13 Montana Seat 2 (10, 002 more population needed) Louisiana Seat 7 Oregon Seat 6 Ohio Seat 17 15
