1. Youth hostels http: //www. yas. nic. in (5 Sep. 2013) • In India the Youth Hostel movement was initiated by the Youth Hostels Association of India in 1949. • Till 1966 the Association had created a number of simple youth hostelling facilities by using University/College Hostels during vacation. • The Government scheme for constructing Youth Hostels was embarked upon by the Ministry of Education in early sixties. • With effect from 4 th January 1985, the subject was transferred to the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports. • At present, while 77 Youth Hostels have already been constructed across the country, 5 more Youth Hostels are under various stages of construction. 08 -09 -2021 03: 08: 42 Youth & Development 3

1. Youth hostels • On the advice of the Planning Commission, a Central Committee on Youth Hostels was constituted in February 1962 which Committee outlined a programme for constructing four model youth hostels in Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Kolkatta and 10 similar youth hostels at places of historic and cultural interest. • In 1966 the responsibility of establishing Youth Hostels was transferred to the Department of Tourism on the recommendation of a Working Group set up by the Planning Commission in October 1965. The Department of Tourism implemented the scheme of constructing 17 Youth Hostels. YOUTH HOSTEL SCHEME • The construction of Youth Hostels is a joint venture of the Central and State Governments. 08 -09 -2021 03: 08: 44 Youth & Development 4

YOUTH HOSTEL SCHEME • The State Government makes available to the Central Government a fully developed plot of land, free of cost, measuring 1. 5 to 2 acres, for construction of a Youth Hostel, keeping in view the various considerations that decide its suitability. In case of State Capitals, big Cities and hilly areas a fully developed plot of land measuring 0. 75 to 1 acre may be considered as acceptable for the construction of Youth Hostel building. • The State Government gives the land on lease to the Central Government for a period of 99 years on a nominal rent of Rs. 1 per month. The Government of India constructs the Youth Hostel and the completed building is leased to the State Government for a period of 99 years on a nominal rent of Rs. 1 per month. 08 -09 -2021 03: 08: 45 Youth & Development 5

YMCA http: //www. ymcaindia. org • The YMCA Movement began in London in the drapery establishment of M/s Hitchcock and Rodgers in which a young apprentice of 21, George Williams, took the initiative in organizing Bible classes in his bedroom. • It brought in a cohesive group of twelve of his co-workers from many denominations of the Christian church to form the very first Young Men’s Christian Association on June 6, 1844 on 72, St. Paul’s Churchyard (destroyed during aerial bombings in World War II) • The first World Conference of the YMCAs took place in Paris in August 1855 which enacted the foundational principles of the Movement, the Paris Basis. YMCA • The YMCA movement is the oldest largest lay, Christian, ecumenical, membership movement in the world spread across 12000 local associations in 125 countries with 45 million members. • The YMCA in India took roots in what is now Kolkata, way back in 1857. On February 27, 1857, the Calcutta Christian Juvenile Society of 1822 formed by John Lawsan, a Baptist Missionary associated with William Carey changed its name to Calcutta YMCA. This was the beginning of the very first YMCA in Asia to be followed by Colombo, Trivandrum, Bombay, Madras and others. • In 1890, David Mc. Conaughy, a young American from the YMCA Movement in USA arrived in Madras and founded the YMCA there. He was later instrumental in forming the Indian National Council of YMCAs, the forerunner of the National Council of YMCAs of India, following a conference in 1891. 08 -09 -2021 03: 08: 49 Youth & Development 7

2. YMCA • The India YMCA Movement has 556 affiliated local associations across its nine Regions in the country with the membership of around 2 lakhs, comprising both men and women. There are 140 YMCA Professional Secretaries in India. • The Indian YMCA is the second largest network in the world after the USA and is a part of the global YMCA fraternity which is known as World Alliance of YMCAs with 125 member countries. • National Council of YMCAs of India is also affiliated to the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs and is among the 27 member countries. • The national headquarters was situated in Calcutta from 1891 to 1964 and, finally shifted to New Delhi in 1964 at Bharat Yuvak Bhawan, 1, Jai Singh Road. • The National Council celebrated its centenary in 1991. 08 -09 -2021 03: 08: 50 Youth & Development 8

2. YMCA: Projects • YMCA Indian Student Hostel, London: Long-term Accommodation for Students and Transit accommodation for YMCA members in Central London. Established in 1920 • YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai: A full-fledged Autonomous college providing Teachers Training in Physical Education- Degree as well as Post Graduate Courses- premier physical Education college in India. Established in 1920. • YMCA Maharashtra English School, Pune: An English Medium Higher Secondary School initiated for the benefit of the local community. • YMCA Marthandam Project & Rural Centers, Marthandam: A Model Rural Development Project initiated in 1924. YMCA: Projects • YMCA Youth Hostel, Kanyakumari: An ideal place for Camps, Group Stay and Retreats at Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of Indian peninsula. • YMCA Boys Division, Tirupattur & Camp Centre, Yellagiri: Initiated as a special project for the upliftment of rural boys which later developed a full fledged school and has a Boys' Home in the campus. The Camp Centre at Yellagiri Hills has all modern facilities to have camps, retreats and group stay in a natural setting. • YMCA Camp Centre & Alwaye Project: A full fledged Camping and Conference Center on the bank of River Periyar. 2. YMCA: Projects • YMCA Vythiri Tribal Development Project: A project initiated for the comprehensive development of the tribal people of Wayanad District in Kerala. Facilities for group stay and conferences. • YMCA Indukurpet Project: A community Development project for the upliftment of rural people and tribals with a community school (AP). • YMCA Bhimtal Project: Bhimtal- an ideal camp centre in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand state has a Youth Centre in Bhimtal with the facilities of camping, trekking, conference facilities and accommodation for groups as well as tourists in the backdrop of hills and lakes. YWCA http: //www. ywcaindia. org • The YWCA in India continues to be challenged in empowering women and girls to face gender inequities, social and economic disparities, caste based discrimination and all forms of violence against women. • Today in a world ridden with environmental degradation, violation of human rights, the YWCA as one of the largest women’s movements is in a strong position to be an agent for social transformation and change 08 -09 -2021 03: 09: 05 Youth & Development 12

YWCA • In a changing world with changing needs, the YWCA of India needs to respond effectively with timely intervention in programmes and projects that specifically address the needs of marginalized communities. • It calls us to move into new areas of work such as Sexual reproductive health rights of young women and girls, HIV/AIDS, and our work to be inclusive of all communities regardless of age, class, caste, creed, religion and to be committed to protecting human dignity and environment. 08 -09 -2021 03: 09: 05 Youth & Development 13

YWCA: Projects • Fairhaven’s, Nainital: Spread over two acres of undulating terrace gardens with an idyllic view. • The main service of the YWCA of Nainital, which originally owned this building since 1913, is to provide board and residential facilities for working women. The YWCA of India developed it into a full-fledged Holiday Home after enlarging it in 1968. • Pine Retreat, Mussoorie: ‘Doon View’ as it was called before being renamed “PINE RETREAT”, overlooks a fascinating view of Dehra Dun. The foundation stone of ‘Doon View’ YWCA Mussoorie was laid in 1916. YWCA of India developed and ran the place as a Holiday Home cum Summer School. • The peak season is from May to mid July and opens 8 months in a year. The chief attraction of this Guest House is its vicinity to the shopping mall of Mussoorie and yet being able to maintain its quietness 08 -09 -2021 03: 09: 11 Youth & Development 16

YWCA: Projects • Spreadacres, Dehra Dun – A Service Project for the Elderly • The YWCA of India Project at Dehra Dun, which started in 1945, caters especially to the elderly and to young women. “Spreadacres” House is located at the foot hills of the Shivalik ranges of the Himalayas. The project was started with the objective of providing residential home to retired elderly women who needed a safe place to stay. • A high standard is maintained and all facilities are provided to make the elderly residents comfortable. Sale of fruits from the orchard, which is part of the premises, goes towards the costs for annual repairs of the property. Other contingency amounts are managed through the YWCA of India funds. • Working Women’s Hostel, Chandigarh: The land on which the building was erected was donated to the YWCA for the work of the community, however, noting the need for a working women’s hostel, the land was accordingly utilized. 08 -09 -2021 03: 09: 42 Youth & Development 17

YWCA: Projects • Multipurpose Centre for Senior Citizens, WYOMING, COONOOR: “Wyoming”, Coonoor located in an estate of almost 16 acres of wooded land in the heart of Coonoor and very favourably placed came into existence in 1905. Earlier utilized as a Missionary Holiday Home, it became a National Project in 1969. • “Wyoming”, Coonoor attracts many tourists and transit guests because of residential schools situated in the vicinity. Excursion groups from schools and colleges are also housed and provided low cost guest services at the Project • YWCA International Guest House, New Delhi: A welcoming annex to the National Headquarters for four decades, the International Guest House cater to transit guests both foreigners and Indian since it was opened in 1962. 08 -09 -2021 03: 09: 46 Youth & Development 18

YWCA: Projects • The IGH is located in the heart of the city, close to the Connaught Place and Parliament House both which are a hub of activity socially and politically. • Though the objective was to provide transit guest facilities to YWCA members and middle income tourists, the Project was also conceived to be an income generating service to help finance the YWCA of India’s growing programmes for women’s development. • Canteen CMC Hospital, Vellore: A National Project serving CMC, Vellore as a Canteen since 1947. The YWCA Canteen in the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore is fulfilling an important purpose in meeting the real needs of many hard working hospital staff, students and patients and their relatives. It was upgraded, expanded and improved in the Centenary year of CMC Hospital. 08 -09 -2021 03: 10: 05 Youth & Development 19

YWCA: Projects • Anandagiri, Ootacamund: The Holiday Home has a total number of thirty three rooms including cottages and can meet all requirements be it for marriages, conferences who prefers to book it. • To avail of the best of plants and horticulture facilities, the Project has recently taken up membership with the Nilgiri Rose Society. The Project Committee is diligently taking care of the day to day matters with cooperation of the staff and continues to be host to many a workshop and camp of the YWCA of India, and Local YWCA’s, the National Christian Council, Girl Guides, Student Christian Movement, Bible Society etc. are also utilizing the services of “Anandagiri” effectively. 08 -09 -2021 03: 10: 09 Youth & Development 20
