Encouraging Nominations

Ideas for Nominations Watch and listen at regional meetings for school counselors who are doing impressive work. Send out reminders to the membership to nominate someone. Send the nomination information to area administrators and encourage them to nominate deserving school counselors. Form a regional committee that nominates people for the various awards.

Be sure to go online to the MSCA awards site and nominate your regional SCOY winners. For Your Regional SCOY Recipients…. Let them know when their information has been added to the MSCA awards site. Encourage them to pursue the state awards!!! July 1 is the annual deadline BUT doing this application takes thought, planning and time. They cannot wait until the last minute to do this.

§ MAKE SURE YOUR NOMINEES FOR SCOY HAVE MET REMEMBER… THE MSCA MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS (3 YEARS OF CONSECUTIVE MEMBERSHIP BEFORE AND INCLUDING THE YEAR OF NOMINATION)

Changes and Clarification: A person may not self-nominate. There must be a letter from the region’s Professional Recognition Chair stating that the individual has been awarded the region’s School Counselor of the Year recognition. The state application comes from ASCA. We have strict instructions that we are NOT to make that application public as it is used by all 50 states. However, it’s important that SCOY applicants be able to discuss how they use data in their practice, and how they advocate for their program.

Emphasize that the letters of recommendation MUST follow what the rubric is looking for. Suggestions: Do not award points when the same examples are used from letter to letter. It’s better to have less letters with more examples.

Changes: Headshot should be sent electronically with the nomination. Only two letters are required; 4 maximum. We are looking for examples according to the rubric. Please have your nominators follow those areas noted in the rubric. Points equal how many examples fall into those categories. If each letter provides the same examples, they will only be counted once. As regional Professional Recognition Chair, please upload the nomination packet to the website.

Questions/Requests: For winners, what is the consensus of who should relay the information to the school of the winner? For those not selected, who should relay that information? PLEASE encourage colleagues in your region to attend the Professional Recognition Ceremony if someone in your area is an award recipient.
