This may include independent work, group work, participation, notebook checks, exit slips and other activities. ▪ Homework grades - will be given for work done outside of class. Not all homework assignments will be weighted the same and all homework assignments will be reviewed the following day in class. Most homework assignments will be recorded and tallied at the end of each 9 weeks for a homework grade. We will be using NOREDINK. com and USATESTPREP. com to prepare for FSA testing.
Syllabus review ▪ EXTRA CREDIT: -Throughout the year extra credit assignments will be given with the maximum of 2 used each semester. Extra credit does not “roll over” from one semester to the next so please do not ask. Any form of extra credit can be found on my website. ▪ Types of extra credit- – Short story response essays- On my website (under construction) – Bought extra credit- to support clubs only (happens seldom) – Book Christmas ornament- You have until the beginning of December to create an original ornament inspired by a book. It must show time and effort put into it and be original. This 1 ornament may take the place of 2 extra credit grades.
Syllabus Review VI. Classroom Policies ▪ “Office” Hours: I will be available for student/teacher conferencing and parent/ teacher conferencing after school and by phone/email. You must make an appointment in advance for any conferences. In the event that you have any questions or concerns you may always stop by after class if my door is open. ▪ Absences: Work missed because of an unexcused absence cannot be made up. Any assignments missed will earn a Z in the gradebook. In the case of an excused absence, you will have 48 hours for every excused absence to make up work for a full grade as long as you immediately bring a signed note to the office. It is your responsibility to request any missed work. It is also your responsibility to stamp your work as absent and turn it in the late bin. If you know in advance that you are going to be absent, please see me ASAP during my “office” hours or the last 5 minutes of class so we can set up a schedule for you to make up your missed work. ▪ Late Work: Late work is accepted and must be turned in within 1 day of the original deadline. It is your responsibility to complete assignments on time and turn them in when I ask for them. Any late work will only be accepted 1 day after the due date (not counting weekends) for nothing higher than a C. It will be your responsibility to stamp your work as late and place it in the late bin. ▪ Tardiness: If you are going to be late to class, you MUST go to the office and obtain a tardy slip. If you are late coming from another teacher’s class, you MUST bring a note from that teacher. If the tardy is unexcused, you will get a zero for the classwork missed. Excessive tardy will result in a detention.
Syllabus Review ▪ Classroom Materials: There are materials reserved specifically for your use in this classroom as well as materials reserved specifically for the teacher’s use. Please adhere to which of these items you are allowed to use openly and which you may not use without my permission. DO NOT remove any of the items from my classroom, doing so will be considered stealing. Because I provide these materials for you I expect you to use them in a mature manner. Any materials stolen or broken will not be replaced by myself. ▪ ▪ Class Library: I have a collection of literature in my classroom; you are welcome to read any of these during free time in class or to borrow them for your own pleasure. To borrow a book you must use the check-out sheet, and renew or return the book directly to me within a month’s time.
Syllabus Review ▪ Independent reading: We will be reading roughly 5 books throughout the year. It will be your responsibility to acquire the book and read it. A list of the novels we will be reading will be posted to my website within the month. A deadline will be given in which you must show proof of purchasing the book for a grade at the beginning of each book being assigned. There will be classwork/ homework attached to each book as well as a writing project and a creative interpretation project. These two projects will be worth a test grade each. A quiz will be given (possibly more than once) for each independent reading selection. ▪ Because of the number of students not reading the novels and simply googling them, etc. there is a grading policy in effect. All projects will be due BEFORE the quiz will be given. You MUST pass the quiz in order for your projects to be graded. A failing grade on the quiz results in Z’s being given for the projects. If there are questions about this policy please contact me.
