TEXAS MILITARY 92, 145 white males between the ages of 18 and 45 live in Texas of that only 60, 000 -70, 000 served as soldiers Texas organized 32 companies by 1862 Terry’s Texas Rangers commanded by Frank Terry and Ross’s brigade commanded by General Ross received fame during the war Confederate government started a draft requiring men to serve in the army An unpopular exception were men who owned 20 slaves or more were allowed to stay home

Baylor led troops into New Mexico to claim it as a Confederate territory There was a battle at Galveston Island- Lincoln ordered a blockade of southern ports to stop the shipment of supplies. Union troops captured the island- Confederate forces won the island back

PALMITO RANCH Last land battle of the Civil War fought May 12, 1865 Union blockade of Southern ports forced Confederate troops to find another route to ship cotton out and bring in supplies. Cotton was transported through Brownsville to Matamoros. Union forces took over Brownsville to enforce the blockade, Confederate forces under control of John Ford and Santos Benavides took over the area and fought Union troops, unaware that Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Union forces.
