CLASSROOM ENGAGEMENT Students are expected to be engaged in learning at all times because teaching and learning is always happening throughout the day. If I am not giving direct instruction to the entire class, I may be working with a small group or one-on-one with a student. Consequently, students should remain focused and not disturb the learning environment.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR Good Citizens Happy Face and Star Students will be rewarded! Students exhibiting good citizenship will be rewarded for their behavior and a happy face will be recorded in their parents’ communication log. In addition, names will be written on the bulletin board under a happy face and at the end of the day, each child will receive a gift (toy, snack, extra recess, free choice…). Discipline Plans for Inappropriate Behavior Students that are not behaving appropriately will be reported. A description report will be written in the parents’ communication log. Parents should sign communication logs nightly. Required behavior will be expressed. A parent conference will be required if behavior doesn’t improve.

Homework Your child will receive nightly homework, Monday through Thursday compiled in a weekly packet. What kind of homework will my child receive? *Writing *Math * Classroom books *Nightly reading (comprehension stories) Books should be read at home 3 to 5 times the night they go home and then reread again later. If your child is not reading them independently, it is strongly suggested that someone at home read the book(s) to them until they can read them. Below are some tips to help with reading at home. How to Help at Home Help your child read books. Read to your child and with your child. Then listen to your child read to you. Discuss stories with your child. Take child to the library to check out books. Talk to your child and ask questions about what they are learning. Weekly Reading Log A reading log will be given to your child on Mondays. Please return logs the following Monday morning, signed and completed. Record the title of book, how many minutes your child read and a parent’s signature. Return completed log on Tuesday if we are not in school on Monday. Please Note: All first grade students must read 20 -30 minutes nightly These signed and completed logs will be used for monthly rewards.
