PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention Systems PBIS is a set of strategies and systems adapted by Maple Grove Elementary to reduce school disruption and educate all our students on appropriate behavior. • Our expectations: Respectful, Responsible, Safe, Caring • Class Punchcard • Individual Student Punchcards
Snack I strongly encourage you to send a HEALTHY snack for your child. It must be nut free. Reading the label is your best bet in determining whether or not the snack would be safe for our classroom. Not only does your child’s snack need to be nut free, but it also cannot be produced in a factory where peanuts or tree nuts are processed. Good nutrition is a big part of feeling good and being ready to learn! Some good examples of snacks might be bananas, apples, grapes, cheese, crackers, etc. Our new policy is all snacks must have a label!
• Please be sure you send the appropriate outdoor attire for your child. Please mark your child’s belongings with his or her initials on the tag of each item. • Remember to send boots, snow pants and appropriate gloves and hats when the snow begins to fall! • Often times it is chilly in the morning. • We do not control the temperature in our classrooms. It is frequently cold in our room! Your child can bring a sweatshirt or fleece to wear in the classroom!

Time: 1: 00 -2: 05 Our district uses the Everyday Math curriculum. The philosophy behind Everyday Math is to expose children to as much math as possible instead of skill and drill. During math, students participate in whole group lessons, small group lessons, independent math games, math games with a buddy, and other activities. This program relies heavily on the combined effort of parents and teachers together. Please ensure your child completes his or her homework and returns it to school the next day. An important part of our math curriculum is building fact power or fluency. Once a week, students will be tested on their math facts and bring home a strip of facts to practice each night for 5 -10 min.

Your child’s take home folder should be going home and coming to school everyday. Please check this folder each evening. Beginning with unit 2, math homework is sent home every other evening. At the beginning of each unit I will send home the Home Link Family Letter. Keep it in a safe place as you will need to refer to it for future math assignments. Math homework is due the very next day.

• For most students, we encourage temporary spelling (ptza) to get students writing. However, we will work on conventional spelling as confidence begins to grow. • We will be studying each phonetic sound throughout the year through our phonics curriculum. Students enjoy spending time learning phonemic awareness through songs and poems. As the year progresses, we spend less time on this. • Spelling is incorporated through the Words Their Way program as well. Students are given a pre-assessment that allows them to be placed in the correct Words their Way group for optimal instruction.
