Alliteration Introductions • Adjectives modify nouns and are descriptive. Alliteration is the repetition of beginning sounds. 1. Students will introduce themselves using an adjective that starts with the same letter of the starting letter of their first name; at the same time 2. For example, Hi everyone, I am Sassy Sabrina • Note: No two students can have the same adjective and the ideas is that you must try to name everyone 3. Then on a scale from 1 -10, rate your ELA skills

Class Rules • Respect yourself and your future. • Respect your classmates and their right to learn. • Respect your teacher. • Respect your school and your community.
Assignment • Separate into 4 groups. • Each group will be given one class rule. • Each group will expound and elaborate what each rule entails. • Finally, each group will share their explanation to the class.
Homework • In your lecture notebooks, you will answer the following questions in paragraph form. • 1. Explain how will you uphold these four class rules? • 2. Out of the four rules, which one do you think is the most important and why?

Notebook Format • Lecture notebook is divided into 4 parts: • • Basic notes (20) Author Studies (20) Literary terms (30) Grammar/Writing (15) • • 1. Number your pages on the bottom right hand corner. 2. Write the headings on the tabs 3. Divide your notebook accordingly 4. Glue the tabs to stagger on the top of the divvied pages.
Student Portfolio • Manila folder • 5 Sections: Quizzes, tests, Capstone projects, Worksheets, Misc. ELA assignments • Organized by dates most recent first • 10% of your grade (need all your papers) • Check graded work container
Journal entries • Brainstorm – web (1 st semester) or outline (2 nd semester) • 5 paragraphs each entry – introduction, body (3 paragraphs), and conclusion • Vocabulary words – 5 from the current set, highlighted • Note: • Written in academic language – no simple sentences, do not use contractions, try not to use “I” statements unless they are personal entries
Journal Do’s: • Start each sentence with a capital letter and use proper punctuation. • Use proper grammar to the best of your ability. • Use complete sentences. • Check your spelling. • Use descriptive language. Help me “see” what you are saying. • If I make a suggestion for future entries, please follow the suggestion.
Journal Don’t’s: • Do not use text-speak (in other words, write out complete words). • Do not start a sentence with a conjunction. • Do not use inappropriate language. • Do not tell inappropriate jokes or stories. • Do not repeat journal entries. • Do not make a list AS your journal entry. • Do not plagiarize and copy your entries from another source.
Vocabulary sets • Each entry looks as follows: • • 1. Word: definition Part of Speech (POS) Derivatives (different forms of the word) Sentence (academic, not simple) • Sample entry: 1. Ascertain: to determine or figure something out • POS: Verb • Derivatives: Ascertained • Sentence: From the reading, I was able to ascertain the meaning of the word by using context clues.
Vocabulary Practice Task: Create a vocabulary entry using the correct format • Quench: to satisfy or appease • Recompense: a type of payment or reward • Manifold: of many kinds; numerous and varied • Persevere: to persist, endure, or continue
Homework • In your lecture notebooks, you will finish answering the following questions in paragraph form. • 1. Explain how will you uphold these four class rules? • 2.
