Mrs Pryce’s New Funny Phonics segmenting/blending/reading igh trigraph
Tricky words: I the to (to be rehearsed before reading sentences). Activity: Children use pictures to ‘guess’ (predict) what the word could be. Some words are obvious and some may take some discussion, with trial and error. • Possible prompts: “That would make sense. If you are right, what sound will come first? ” “Were you right? What would come next? ” or “Let’s have another guess. What could it be, beginning with that first sound? ” This will encourage children to make predictions when reading, as well as segmenting and blending, and to cross check predictions by looking at the letters. • After each set of words, there are slides using phoneme grids. It is an opportunity to use white boards, if appropriate, for children to write their responses. • In slides 14 to 17, ask children to re-read the sentence fluently once they have correctly decoded each word. • The cloze sentences slides (16, 17) take the process a little further. Slide 17 requires children to ‘read on’ before predicting the missing word. • The last slide gives an opportunity for children to practise reading words at speed. • ‘Tricky’ sight words are kept to a minimum so digraphs/trigraphs can be taught in any order.
