Tricky words: I the Activity: • Children use pictures to ‘guess’ (predict) what the word could be. Possible prompts: “That would make sense. If you are right, what sound will come first? ” “Were you right? What would come next? ” or “Let’s have another guess. What could it be, beginning with that first sound? ” This will encourage children to make predictions when reading and to cross check predictions by looking at the letters. • After each set of words, there are slides using phoneme grids or ‘sound buttons’. It is an opportunity to use white boards, if appropriate, for children to write their responses. • The cloze sentence slides take the process a little further: once they have decoded and confirmed the missing word, ask children to re-read the sentence, to encourage fluency. • Slide 23 gives an opportunity to read words at speed.
