Mrs Moranos PreK News Week of October 26
Mrs. Morano’s Pre-K News Week of October 26, 2018 This week’s theme: Ways each person in the family helps out. ELA Our trade book for the week was Kevin & His Dad by Irene Smalls. The book centered around a boy and his dad. They did chores together on a Saturday (dusting, laundry, dishes, vaccuming) and when they finished they did fun activities together (played baseball, went to the movies and had ice-cream). Our vocabulary words for the week were: chore, clean, cook, inside, outside, and work. Math In math we used sensory bins filled with black beans & different size orange pompoms. The children used tweezers to sort them by size into pumpkin cups. When they finished, the scooped, poured & played until their “pumpkin patch” was perfect! Handwriting Our letter of the week was letter I. We have been practicing writing the letter I as well as thinking of words that start with the /i/ sound Science Social Studies We continued talking about pumpkins. The children observed what they look like inside & out. We used describing words such as smooth, thick, stringy, etc. as well as felt it. We discussed the parts of the pumpkin and colored a diagram labeling the parts. We discussed some basic fires safety rules and how firefighters help the community. We played a game using the Scholastic News interactive websight in which the children had to dress the firefighter in his firefighter uniform and safety gear. Religion. In Religion we identified the Church building as God’s house. We discussed that God is in church where the Church family gathers to pray. We learned about objects in church, such as stained glass windows, candles, bells, the Bible and the cross. Father Simon surprised us with a visit and told us a little bit about what a priest does and wears. News & Reminders Next week is Halloween. It is a St. Gregory tradition that children wear their Halloween costumes to school. That being said, please be mindful that your child must be able to use the bathroom unassisted while wearing their costume. Accessories such as wings, masks, wands, etc. , are NOT permitted in school. Lastly, the children MUST wear their sneakers. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
