MRS. CORPUS' ELA (CLASS) LIMERICKS POETRY UNIT
A limerick is a short and fun five-line poem with a distinctive rhythm. WHAT IS A LIMERICK The first, second, and fifth lines are longer than the third and fourth lines. The rhyming pattern (rhyme scheme) is AABBA. The longer A lines rhyme with each other, and the shorter B lines rhyme with each other.
LIMERICKS FROM: A BOOK OF NONSENSE BY EDUARD LEAR (THIS IS A POEM COMPOSED OF (7) LIMERICKS 1. There was an Old Man with a beard (A) Who said, "It is just as I feared! (A) Two Owls and a Hen, (B) Four Larks and a Wren (B) Have all built their nests in my beard!" (A) 2. There was an Old Man with a nose, (A) Who said, "If you choose to suppose (A) That my nose is too long (B) You are certainly wrong! (B) That remarkable Man with a nose. (A) As you can see, lines 1, 2, & 5 rhyme, and lines 3 & 4 make a separate rhyme as well. Every stanza is like a poem, telling a story in itself. ,
A BOOK OF NONSENSE (CONTINUED) 3. There was an Old Man on a hill(A) Who seldom, if ever, stood still; (A) He ran up and down, (B) In his Grandmother's gown, (B) Which adorned that Old Man on a hill. (A) 4. There was a Young Lady whose chin (A) Resembled the point of a pin (A) So she had it made sharp, (B) And purchased a harp, (B) And played several tunes with her chin. (A)
QUARANTINE BY THELMA CORPUS 1. First attempt (not quite a limerick) 2019 was good, but now it is gone, (A) And when 2020 came, we were gone (A) Our schools, books, and friends, (B) Homework, recess, and trends, (B) Disappointed and discouraged, I only slept and yawned. (A)
TWO MORE LIMERICKS I am with my family in quarantine, (A) I am not feeling like a queen, (A) Walking around in my pijamas, (B) Wishing to be in Bahamas; (B) I want my old life back, Quarantine!(A) Wake me up, before I scream! (A) Tell me it was all a dream, (A) I want to run away, (B) But the governor says, I must stay! (B) This is a nightmare, not a dream! (A)
POSITIVE LIMERICK I now have nothing to do. (A) Time, there is a lot of you! (A) Mom said, learn something new! (B) Don't be so blue! (B) God will take good care of you!(A)
NOW IT IS YOUR TURN Write a two to three stanza Limerick book. (This means, 5 lines per stanza) Remember to keep the rhyme scheme (AABBA) Longer lines (1, 2, 5) and shorter lines (3&4) It does not have to be perfect; just do your best! This will be graded!
