Adverbs � Modifies � Verbs � And adjectives (really cute), (ran extremely fast), other adverbs (very easily) � Tells: • How? (quickly, slowly, stupidly, gracefully, effortlessly) • When? (now, later, then, immediately, yesterday) • Where? (there, outside, inside, away) • To what extent? (frequently, never, twice, sometimes, hardly, extremely, minimally, greatly, too, more) � Not is always an adv.
Adjectives � Modifies � And nouns (I have a green pen) Pronouns (They are happy) � Tells: • Which one? (this that) • How many? (six, four hundred, many, several) • What kind? (red, large, sick, cloudy, enormous, petite) � Proper adjective: proper noun used as an adjective (American flag)
Use Adverbs with Action verbs and Adjectives with Linking verbs �She skates [action] gracefully. �She yells [action] loudly. �Tori is [linking] tired. �Kacey and Tucker will be [linking] hungry.
The “ly” rule for adverbs does not always hold true �Adjectives that end with an “ly” �Identify why these are adjectives (what do they answer) • • • Friendly dog Lowly job Early flight Lovely sunset Deadly chemicals
