MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging
WHAT IS MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING? It is a scan to get detailed pictures of your baby’s brain We take different types of pictures to provide information regarding brain development and function
WHAT TO EXPECT THE DAY OF THE MRI? Upon your arrival: A member of our team will meet you and your baby at the entrance to the EAST building, direct you to parking, and help you enter the building They will guide you to the exam room and obtain length and weight of your baby
WHAT TO EXPECT THE DAY OF THE MRI? The nurse will explain the developmental assessment and MRI scan to you The developmental assessment is brief and examines how newborns are adapting to their surrounding You will have time to ask questions about every part of the assessment and the MRI scan
WHAT TO EXPECT THE DAY OF THE MRI? Prior to your infant’s MRI scan, we will have you feed your baby so that their belly is nice and full. This is important because we get the best data if your baby is sleeping and content, and a nice full belly helps with both. Once you are finished feeding your baby, we will remove their clothing, swaddle them in a blanket and wrap them snugly. We need to do this because we can’t have any metal in the scanner.
DURING THE SCAN… The scan typically runs about 60 minutes, but we allow for 90 minutes to ensure we have enough time to obtain all of the pictures A team member will keep you updated you throughout the scan The exam room is your space, so please feel free to relax and nap.
IS IT SAFE FOR MY CHILD TO UNDERGO AN MRI SCAN? There are no known dangers associated with MRI scans, and they are safer than other types of imaging like an Xray or CT scan Our team has safely performed more than 1000 MRI scans in babies through prior studies
CAN I STAY WITH MY CHILD DURING THE SCAN? Yes, you can be in the MRI room with your child, but you need to pass MRI safety checklist Most parents choose to stay in the waiting room Our team will always monitor your baby closely during the scan
WHAT IF I DO NOT WANT THE MRI, BUT I AM FINE WITH OTHER PARTS OF THE STUDY? Unfortunately, the MRI scans are required to be in the study
