Progress in understanding of fracture mechanics issue in 7075 Al shells and mitigation (LBNL-FSU) § § § Tensile properties have been measured and are consistent with literature K 1 c measurements demonstrate anisotropic behavior; vary from 17 to 28 MPa√m depending on direction Measurement campaign underway to evaluate difference between 7075 -T 6 and 7075 -T 652, and of shell material that broke (nominally 7075 -T 652) Radii of cutouts are being fully evaluated for limiting cases based on realistic machining options Results will be summarized and reviewed by an external committee KIC = 20 MPa * √m Flaw size detection limit => Radius of 5 mm or greater provides margin 6
