MOVE TOGETHER: What is about? § Creating a new culture of urban mobility in Europe (EU Green Paper), § by means of raising citizens awareness of what EU research is doing and how it could/should help to improve the quality of mobility in their cities (Move Together Citizens Statement), and § showing how “move together practices” may help to implement a better mobility in their towns, increasing the awareness and involvement of citizens (Move Together Exhibition & Move Together Day)

MOVE TOGETHER: the EU Green Paper The EU Green Paper on Urban Mobility aims to implement “sustainable transport” in the urban environment across Europe, which means: • Free-flowing towns and cities • Greener towns and cities • Smarter urban transport • Accessible urban transport • Safe and secure urban transport

MOVE TOGETHER: the EU urban transport research • RTD Framework Programmes • Sixth FP 2002 -2006; operational till 2010 – Seven thematic priorities – Four horizontal areas – 17. 5 billion Euro of which 610 million for surface transport and 1075 million for aeronautics and space • Urban transport – ~ 75 projects • • 59 funded by ‘surface transport’ thematic priority 5 funded by ‘policy support’ horizontal area 11 funded under ITS thematic priority Rest by other programmes

Who was involved so far? Partners: Institute of Studies for the Integration of Systems (Italy) Project Coordinator The Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in the Social Sciences (Austria) (Germany) Forum for Regional, Local and Urban Sustainable Mobility Governance (Italy) VII Department of Rome Municipality, Traffic (Italy) The project is funded by the European Commission, under the 7 th Framework Programme, transport research. Who was involved so far? Citizens: Two citizen groups were centrally involved in the Move Together Project – 27 EU citizens, one from each EU country, and 25 citizens of Rome. Who will be involved now? EU Institutions: EU Institutions will be involved in the final “Move Together Day” conference, on next 7 December in Brussels: § European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), hosting the conference § European Commission: - Commissioner for Transport and DG TREN Unit in charge of the Urban Mobility Action Plan - DG Research Unit in charge of urban transport research § European Parliament – Intergroup of MEPs on urban issues

How do we Move? As urban citizens, we can move in many different ways, including « « by tram « « by car « « by motorbike by bike » » by bus » » on foot » » The Exhibition shows different areas of urban transport mobility • cars and fuels • public transport • walking and cycling • freight and cargo transport • urban planning and strategies Each of these topics give some examples of EU research projects that address the challenges of our modern mobility needs.

EU Research The exhibition highlights a variety of EU urban transport research projects, ranging from sustainable fuels, to public transport access, to urban planning.

How does this EU research add to urban sustainability? What kind of urban environment would you like to live in? What would it take to get there?

What types of projects have already been implemented in Europe? The map gives hands-on examples.

What about the Move Together poster exhibitions? ► Show the common “move together” concept (12 posters) ► Show the diversity of approaches to the same problem (the “move together” practices in your city) ► Engage citizens and stakeholders in “move together” events ► Feedback to the “Move Together Day” conference in Brussels

What you will be asked to do? ► Produce the 12 posters in national languages, based on the common template provided by us ► Print and show the posters in one visible place in your city ► Produce and/or show any other relevant material you may wish related to urban sustainable transport in your town ► Organise “move together” events ► Report back to the “Move Together Day” conference in Brussels

How this should work? ► A template of the 12 posters will be provided to you in June. ► You will be asked to translate/adapt the text in the template and print the 12 posters (a copy of those will be also uploaded on the Move Together web-site) ► The EU contribution to this standard activity will be limited to a max. acceptable amount ► Any EU contribution to the other products and/or events you will organise is subject to showing the EU, FP 7 and Move Together project logos

What will be your reporting duties? ► By mid July to produce a one page summary in English of your exhibition, describing the city context and problem, aim of the “move together” policy in your city, exhibition activities, exhibition place ► The information for this summary was already provided in your proposals. We will circulate a draft summary for all the 11 cities, asking you to check and modify/integrate your own summary description as needed ► By mid-October to produce a report of your exhibition, according to a template which will be distributed in July

What may be your contribution to the Move Together Day conference of 7 December? ► Report your own view and feedback from the exhibition experience in the panel discussion on the EU Urban Action Plan (morning session) ► Discuss “move together” practices with a panel of citizens (morning session) and EU institution representatives (afternoon session) ► Show up your exhibition materials (photos, videos, reports) at the conference and/or in the Move Together exhibition which will be held at the conference place (EESC)
