MOUNTAIN HOME SCHOOL DISTRICT’S STEM INITIATIVE § The Mountain Home School District #193, in conjunction with the Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University and a grant from the Department of Education, is dedicated to enhancing students’ STEM education and 21 st Century Skills through the implementation of integrated STEM lessons in grades K-6. For more information contact Carlotta Vaughn at vaughn_cj@mtnhomesd. org
For Students: § Lessons support the development of 21 st Century Skills including the 4 C’s § Lessons include the Engineering Design Process for finding solutions to problems § Lessons strive to increase engagement and self- efficacy For Teachers: § Lessons are designed to guide classroom instruction during the implementation of integrated STEM lessons
Unit 1 And That’s a Trap: Designing and Engineering a Trap 8 Weeks
LESSON SEQUENCE § Lesson 1: Introduction § Lesson 5: Force and Motion § Lesson 2: Matter and Interaction § Lesson 6: Engineering the Trap § Lesson 3: Matter and Interaction § Lesson 7: Engineering the Trap § Lesson 4: Force and Motion § Lesson 8: Presentations & Conclusion
Introduction
Written by Andrew Wallace Illustrated by Andy Elkerton
Design and engineer a trap to catch a monster living in a closet
CREATE A BLUEPRINT
Matter & Interaction
§ Matter is anything that takes up space and the material that something is made up of § Material is the tangible substance that goes into the makeup of a physical object
§ What the appearance of the material is § You will record what each materials color is
§ How well a material can resist scratching, denting, or bending § You will record the hardness of each material on a Likert scale of 1 (softest) to 5 (hardest).
§ How a material feels § You will record an adjective to describe the texture of the material
§ How something bends and snaps back to its original shape without breaking § You will record the flexibility of the material with a yes, no, or sometimes
