The following report highlights the work of the Department of Medical Education over the past year and a half. Included is a list of events sponsored by the Department of Medical Education, as well as faculty profiles of our primary and secondary faculty who have won awards, received grants, written or contributed to publications, and who have been elected to hold national leadership positions. Report of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics • • • July 16, 2008 Harald Schmidt, Assistant Director of the UK’s Nuffield Council on Bioethics, spoke on the Council’s most recent report: PUBLIC HEALTH: ETHICAL ISSUES, a report of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics UK’s Nuffield Council on Bioethics is an independent body that examines the ethical issues raised by new developments in biology and medicine. It has an international reputation for addressing public concerns, and providing independent advice to assist policy makers and stimulate debate in bioethics
Alexander Richman Commemorative Lecture in Humanism and Ethics in Medicine • • September 9, 2008 Speaker: David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, Director of the Institute for Health Policy, Massachusetts General Hospital/Partners Healthcare System, Professor of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School Winner of the Alexander Richman Award: David Thomas, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Ambulatory Care and Training, Mount Sinai School of Medicine The Alexander Richman Commemorative Lecture in Humanism and Ethics in Medicine honors a Mount Sinai School of Medicine faculty member who embodies the qualities of the late Dr. Alexander Richman; a person who is a scholar, ethicist and humanist. Alexander Richman, M. D. , Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine, was a member of the MSSM faculty for nearly forty years before his death in 1982. He is remembered for his contributions to pharmacy and therapeutics, as well as his extensive research on internal organs.

Global Health Center Guest Lecture: Child Trafficking in Ghana • October 29, 2008 • Invited guest speaker: Eric Boakye Peasah, Counter Trafficking and Irregular Migration Project, International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Accra, Ghana • Mr. Eric Boakye Peasah is a professional social worker and the Field Manager of the Counter Trafficking and Irregular Migration project of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Accra, Ghana. In his position with the IOM, Mr. Peasah works with parents, fishermen, chiefs and communities to prevent child trafficking and to protect victims of human trafficking in Ghana through the rescue, rehabilitation, reunification and reintegration of child victims of trafficking.

Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trias Chapter of the Year Award • • • February 21, 2009 Awarded at the National Boricua Latino Health Organization's 36 th annual conference at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine NBLHO awards the Chapter of the Year Award to the chapter that has best represented the ideals of NBLHO through its activities throughout the year. AMA Honors MSSM students • American Medical Association (AMA) honored Robert Accordino, MSc and Nicholas Meo with Medical Student Leadership Awards on March 9 • Awards are presented to medical students, residents/fellows, and early-career physicians in recognition of strong, nonclinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service, public health, and education • Dr. David Muller was also an AMA award winner, receiving the “Pride in the Profession Award”

Reckoning with Evil: Perspectives on Genocide • • • April 22, 2009 A discussion with Daniel Mendelsohn, bestselling author of “The Lost” and Holly Atkinson, MD, Past-President of Physicians for Human Rights and Assistant Professor of Medicine and Co-Director of the Advancing Idealism in Medicine Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine Daniel Mendelsohn uses the lens of his family’s experience in the Holocaust to provide personalized perspective on genocide in the 20 th century Holly Atkinson uses the metaphor of disease to look at possible preventative and treatment strategies for genocide Co-hosted by David Muller, MD, Dean for Medical Education at Mount Sinai and Mark Babyatsky, MD, Vice Chair of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s new Cultural Ambassador Program was introduced. This innovative new program is designed to enhance patient care through improving communication with patients from a wide-variety of cultural backgrounds

AAMC Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship • Awarded to Lisa M. Ochoa-Frongia • Five $5, 000 scholarships were awarded to third-year medical students who have demonstrated leadership in addressing the societal and health care needs of minorities • The four other awards went to students at Yale University School of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School.
