What Happens During a Volcano Eruption?
About Mount Pinatubo • Located in the Philippines • It erupted on June 15 th, 1991 • Home to over 30, 000 people • Covered in Vegetation
Before the Eruption • First warning sign was a earthquake a year before eruption • From March-June 1991 more frequent earthquakes and explosions gradually intensified • Major explosions occurred three days prior to eruption.
Mount Pinatubo Eruption • Mount Pinatubo erupted on June 15 th, 1991, • A typhoon hit at the same time. • Materials combined to create a Lahar. • Took over 600 lives and destroyed a majority of properties
After the Eruption • After the eruption, rainfall and strong winds resulting in a huge volume of lahars • The Lahars buried everything in its way. • Infrastructure was destroyed, floods and diseases affected more than 1 million people
How did Mount Pinatubo’s eruption impact the Philippines? The world?
Impact on the Philippines • Casualties • Towns destroyed • Created more land • Weather cooled down • Diseases and internal effects
Impact on the world • Mount Pinatubo ejected 15 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere • Layer of sulfur acidic droplets • Particles stuck in the Stratosphere • Earth cooling • Contributed to Global warming
Impact on 4 Spheres • The 4 spheres –Biosphere, Geosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere • Biosphere- plant and animal population, damage to human and properties • Geosphere- soil fertilization, destruction on rocks and reefs. • Atmosphere- ash and gas contaminates air, climate and weather conditions • Hydrosphere- warmer and acidic water, melting ice, acid rain
Connections
Summary • Mount Pinatubo’s eruption is the world’s largest explosion to impact a densely populated area. • All the spheres were impacted by the eruption • This eruption contributed to the opening in the ozone layer • Over 600 people died and a lot of infrastructure was destroyed in the process
