Mount meager ● The Mount Meager massif is a group of volcanic peaks in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. ● It lies in the Garibaldi volcanic belt
Mount meager ● Mount Meager is a Complex Volcano. It is a andesitic-torhyodactic stratovolcano. ● Multiple eroded summit lava domes and volcanic necks ● Group of volcanic peaks
Mount meager ● 2, 200, 000 years ago ● The original belt itself was formed by subduction of the Juan de Fuca Plate under the North American Plate at the Cascadia subduction zone along the British Columbia Coast ● Then over time volcanoes like Meager formed through built up of alternate layers of lava and ash.
Interaction #1 Meager Creek Hot Springs
Meager Creek Hot Springs ● From the volcanic heat from Mount Meager, creeks nearby are heated up making hot springs that many go to. ● Pools of warm to hot water form near creek. Spa and accommodation areas.
Interaction #2 2010 Mount Meager Landslide
2010 Mount Meager Landslide ● Mount Meager collapsed in a series of major rock falls and eventually giving out causing catastrophic damage to the area. ● 1, 500 nearby residents were evacuated, bridges and roads destroyed, creeks, camping grounds were temporarily closed. ● Estimated 8. 7 million would cost to repair roads, bridges, etc.
Interaction #3 Recent Volcanic Activity
Volcanic Activity ● Mount Meager during the past couple of years has shown signs of life. Large fumaroles, an opening in or near a volcano, which hot sulfurous gases emerge. ● There also been some recorded small earthquakes. ● All signs for some sort of event involving Mount Meager in the future.
What would happen if It was active?
Environmental Damage Depending on size and explosiveness of the eruption, the damage it can do to the environment can be catastrophic. Similar to what happened to Mt. Saint Helens, nearby life would cease to exist with the pyroclastic flows. Trees would get knocked down, creeks, rivers and the hots spring would be filled with debris, and everything would be covered with ash.
Air Quality The volcanic gasses released into the air would be very toxic for anyone to be in. This will definitely affect nearby settlements. Places like Whistler (~100 km away), Pemberton (~65 km away), and other Garibaldi mountain would be affected greatly by the toxic fumes.
Conclusion Mount Meager maybe be one of Bc’s current threat to a volcanic event. Its presence is something we expand upon when further investigating other volcanoes. Mount Meager also stands out for being a very beautiful volcano that we can expect a lot from in the future.
