Plastic bottles take 400 -1, 000 years to break down naturally.

In the U. S. , 500 million plastic straws are used everyday. That’s 182, 500, 000, 000 every year.

Americans use about 400 million styrofoam coffee cups a day.

Less than 5% of plastic bags are recycled. Where are the rest?

1907 - First synthetic plastic was created.

1963 - Celloplast is used for some grocery store packaging.

1980 - Plastic grocery bags are introduced to America.

1985 - 75% of grocery stores use plastic bags.

2018 - We have a problem… Plastic!

Most Common Bag Bans Three different types of bans: 1. Ban in some stores 1. Pay extra for one use bags 1. Complete ban on single-use plastic bags Ultimately, the best plan would be to retrain society to bring their own reusable bags to stores.

So why Mount Desert Island? What can we do?

Our Goal ● Discuss goals and impact of bans with community members and local businesses. ● Present written ordinances to Southwest Harbor Select Board for approval to bring to town vote in November. ● Share ordinances with the public and collaborate with local businesses. ● Invite all MDI towns to strive for a better future.
