MOTIVATIONAL LEADERSHIP THEORY BY LILY BRIESE
Types of Motivation There are two types of motivation that can be used: -Internal or Intrinsic Motivation -External or Extrinsic Motivation Both types of motivation are centered around our beliefs, values and personal interests
Develop Intrinsic Motivation Driven by: Competence: succeeding in what you do Relatedness: connecting with others. Autonomy: being in control of your life Intrinsic Motivation can be much more powerful and have a much larger effect on an employee. By getting in line with your employees beliefs and values, you can motivate them and make them feel good about their job at the same time Source: http: //changingminds. org/explanations/theories/intrinsic_motivation. htm
Use Extrinsic Motivation Correctly Personalize rewards towards individual employees Maintain a positive environment that makes your employees feel comfortable sharing and attaining their personal goals Minimize Extrinsic Motivators and focus on more important Intrinsic motivators. You can do this by treating your employees fairly, paying them appropriately for their efforts and following through with what you say Source: http: //www. money-zine. com/career-development/leadership-skill/motivation-theory-andleadership/
Herzberg's motivation theory Motivators: They actually motivate an individual. They find their root within the job itself. Include things like achievement, recognition and growth possibilities. Similar to intrinsic motivation. Hygiene Factors: They don't have any motivational value when present, but do have a demotivational value if not present. These factors are extrinsic to the work itself. Includes things like salary, company policy and administration and supervision Similar to extrinsic motivation Source: http: //www. leadership-central. com/two-factor-theory. html#axzz 3 H 1 nwbe. Motivate Yourself The last and one of the most important things to look at when examining motivational leadership is motivating yourself If you stay motivated, you will be able to keep those around you motivated more effectively You need to look at yourself and focus on what motivates you, in order to learn about what may motivate others It is important to practice what you preach and lead by example whenever possible
