Motivation Internal states and external pressures that direct an individual towards a goal or a course of action.
What motivates you to succeed?
What motivates these sports stars?
Motivation Psychologists have identified 2 different types of motivation – intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation Is the drive that comes from within, the need to achieve something for personal satisfaction, a sense of mastery, a sense of accomplishment. The reward for such mastery may well be feelings of greater self-worth or status.
Motivation Extrinsic motivation Is the drive we experience if we are offered an external reward – a prize, a medal, money or praise from another individual. Tangible rewards - Those rewards that can be touched, held or are of physical substance Intangible rewards - Are external rewards that cannot be touched, for example the cheers from a crowd, congratulations from a coach.

What’s best? ? Extrinsic rewards can lose their power – if you are a multi millionaire sports performer one more pay check wont count. If the focus is purely extrinsic then sport can lose its enjoyment The extrinsic prize may not be valued so it may not work. Intrinsically motivated performers tend to stick in sport for longer.
