Motion Vocabulary

Acceleration �The rate at which velocity changes over time; an object accelerates if its speed, direction or both change.

Action/Reaction �Force pairs that are equal in size but opposite in direction.

Air Resistance �friction experienced by objects moving through air

Average Speed �the total distance traveled divided by the total time Time

Balanced Forces �Equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions, producing a net force of 0 N, the object does not move and will not change the motion of a moving object.

Deviate �To make different

Direction �the way in which somebody or something goes, points, or faces

Force �A push or pull that changes the motion or shape of an object

Friction �A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact

Frictionless Surface �A surface that creates little friction against an object moving across its surface.

Gravity �A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses.

Inertia �The tendency of an object to resist being moved or if the object is moving to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object.

Linear Distance vs Time Graph �A graph showing the motion of an object over a given period of time.

Media (Medium) �an intervening substance, such as air, through which a force acts or an effect is produced

Motion �an object’s change in position relative to a reference point.

Net Force �the combination of all forces acting on an object

Newton’s Laws of Motion 1. Objects at rest remains at rest and objects in motion remain in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force. 2. The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied. 3. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Position �the place where somebody or something is, especially in relation to other things

Ramps �a sloping surface that allows access from one level to a higher or lower level, or raises something up above floor or ground level

Reference Point �An object that appears to stay in place.

Speed �The distance traveled divided by the time taken to travel that distance.

Time Interval �a system for measuring periods of time

Unbalance Force �A nonzero net force, which changes an object's motion.

Velocity �The speed of an object in a particular direction.

Weight �A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object; its value can change with the location of the object in the universe.

X-Axis �The horizontal line along the bottom of a graph on which the scale for time is placed.

Y-Axis �The vertical line on the left side of a graph on which the scale for the distance traveled is placed.
