MOTION v. An object is in motion if its distance from another object is changing. v. A reference point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. **An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point**

SPEED v Formula: Speed = distance divided by time (units are typically km/hr or m/s but sometimes you will see cm/s) v Average speed: speed is not always constant so we may want to determine the average speed and to do this the formula we use is the total distance divided by the total time v Instantaneous speed: the rate at which an object is moving at a given instance in time

T T = time T = D/S SPEED TRIANGLE The speed triangle can be used to help you remember the formula for speed and to help manipulate the formula in order to find either distance or time.
