Motion Graphs • Tell how far a body has traveled • Tell how fast it is moving • Tell all the speed changes there have been

Case 1 – A car is at rest (stationary). The graph shows an object

Case 1 – A car is at rest (stationary). The graph shows an object which is not moving (at rest). The distance stays the same as time goes by because it is not moving.

Case 2 – A car is traveling at constant speed. The graph shows that

Case 2 – A car is traveling at constant speed. The graph shows that the objects distance increases as time passes. The object is moving and so it has velocity. The straight line shows it is a constant (not changing).

Case 3 – The car is coming back. This graph shows an object moving

Case 3 – The car is coming back. This graph shows an object moving with constant velocity. It is returning.

Case 4 – The car moves with constant speed, stops and returns. In the

Case 4 – The car moves with constant speed, stops and returns. In the first part of the graph the object is moving with constant velocity. In the second part of the graph the object is at rest (not moving). In the third part the object is again moving with constant velocity.

Speed-Time Graph The graph shows that the objects velocity does not change as time

Speed-Time Graph The graph shows that the objects velocity does not change as time passes. It shows constant velocity.

Speed-Time Graph The graph shows that the objects velocity is increasing as time passes

Speed-Time Graph The graph shows that the objects velocity is increasing as time passes – it is accelerating. The straight line shows that it is constant acceleration.

Can you tell which car is moving quicker to the right?
