Symbol and Motif: What’s the difference? Symbol • A reoccurring object in literature that figuratively represents another idea or thing. Motif • A reoccurring object in literature that figuratively represents another idea or thing.

THINK - Examples from Hunger Games: Symbol • Mockingjay: represents rebellion from oppression, non -conformity, and Katniss. Motif • Fire: represents her District and Katniss’ rage, rebellion from oppression, ferocity, passion, destruction/rebirth… • Costumes • Explosions • Propaganda film

Definitions Symbol • A specific reoccurring object in literature that figuratively (nonliterally) represents another idea or thing. • Stays the Same! Motif • A reoccurring object, literary device, or structure in literature that figuratively (non-literally) represents another idea or thing and is almost always related to theme. • Motifs can appear in different contexts (i. e. water appearing in different ways) – changes shape or form • Motifs can be reoccurring literary devices

Table Group Activity • Identify a movie all of you have seen (or are very familiar with. ) • Identify one symbol and one motif from the movie. • Analyze how they support/develop theme of the movie. • Be ready to share – all of you must contribute verbally.
