The Ten Plagues • God’s way of showing to Pharaoh who is really in control • These plagues hit the Egyptians in all aspects of life and would have crippled their lifestyle • Lasted from 5 months to 1½ years • 2 plagues were announced followed by an unannounced one – 3 x then the worst (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 announced; 3, 6, 9 not)
1. Water into Blood – Ex. 7: 14 -25 • Egyptian gods: Knhum (river’s source), Hapi (spirit of Nile), Osiris (Nile=bloodstream) • Duplicated by Egyptians • Occurs in Goshen where Israelites lived • Dead fish = putrid smell

8. Locusts – Ex. 10: 1 -20 • Egyptian gods: Serapia (protector from locusts) • Pharaoh offers a compromise • Compromise rejected • Pharaoh again confesses sin
9. Darkness – Ex. 10: 21 -29 • Egyptian gods: Thoth (moon); Ra, Amon-re, Aten, Atum, Horus (all sun) • Darnkess at midday • Apparently light still in Goshen
10. Death of Firstborn – Ex. 12: 29 -36 • Judgment on all gods & Pharaoh himself • Ex. 1 – Pharaoh killed the sons of Israel • Now the Lord kills the firstborn of Egypt, Ex. 11 -12 • He will now let Israel go • He will lose his army to death in the Red Sea, Ex. 14: 4 -31
Lessons Learned 1. God’s Will will always be carried out. 2. Disobedience to God results in punishment – immediate and/or eternal! 3. Studying the Old Testament provides many enjoyable stories and valuable lessons – Romans 15: 4.
