MORTON SALT Solar Evaporation Ponds 1918 -Salt Works, Great Salt Lake 1962 - Morton Salt Plant Morton Salt was the first ever to add an anti-caking agent, magnesium carbonate. This additive prevented the salt from getting hard when it was humid. Their free-flowing salt in rainy weather inspired their slogan “When it rains, it pours”. 1966 Aerial Photo from UGS Aerial Imagery Collection 2006 Aerial Photo by Jeff Kubina The Solar Evaporation Ponds are hard to miss, with a variety of colors and a grid-like appearance. Each of the pond sections is important for processing salt out of the brine, water with high salt content. The speed of evaporation is important during crystallization. The mineral gypsum can contaminate the salt if the saltwater evaporates at a slower rate. If that happens then the quality of the salt won't be as good. Utah’s use of rock salt, snow removal Algae concentration will change the color of the water depending on how much salt there is. When the algae turn red it speeds up evaporation resulting in a better quality of salt. Animal salt lick
