History of Community Originally parts of Van Buren and Miami Townships New township of Moraine started February 3, 1953 Became a city on May 12, 1965 • 1954 - Fire Department organized • 1966 - City Income Tax established • 1958 - Police Department formed • 1981 - General Motors Diesel Engine Plant and Chevrolet Small Truck Plant begins production • 2007 - General Motors Moraine Assembly Plant produces their 6 millionth vehicle • 2008 - General Motors Moraine Assembly Plant closes • 2014 - Fuyao Glass purchases the Moraine Assembly Plant

Reason Community was chosen Diversity Variety of income levels and housing Members are concerned and involved in the community Many opportunities for recreation and programs for all ages Community has overcome adversity and is rebuilding

Major Concern/Issue Exposure to Methane gas or other contaminates in the groundwater, soil, or air. There are two landfills located within city limits in a mixed residential and industrial area. While Methane is a remotely harmful greenhouse gas in small doses, it can be fatal if one is exposed to large amounts of the gas. Indeterminate risk for exposure to pollutants.

Symptoms of Methane gas exposure ● Suffocation: breathing high levels of methane can deprive the body of oxygen as it displaces it. ● Dehydration: methane depletes oxygen from the system as it is absorbed in the body through the airway. ● Headache ● Nausea and vomiting ● Blurred vision ● Mental agitation

Nursing Interventions Advocate for reviews and increased research Educate nurses at local hospitals Educate the residents about exposure risks

Community Interventions Encourage the residents to get involved Attend city council meetings Contact the city officials

Interventions on a Larger Scale Extracting landfill gases (LFG’s) from the landfills using a series of wells and a blower/flare (vacuum) system that can direct the collected gas to a central point where it can be processed and treated depending on the use for the gas (EPA, 2016). Benefits of using LFG’s include: Electricity generation Alternative fuels Cogeneration (combines heat and power electricity and thermal energy) Direct Use (to offset the use of another fuel)
