Giotto • Country European Space Agency Mission Comet Halley Flyby Launch Date July 2, 1985 • Spacecraft Mass 960 kg Key Dates Mar 13, 1986 - Comet Halley Distant Flyby Jul 02, 1990 - Earth Flyby Jul 10, 1992 - Comet Grigg-Skjellerup Flyby End of Mission ? ? Comments First closeup images of a comet nucleus First European deep space mission First spacecraft to encounter two comets
The diameter of Halley's visible dust coma at the time of encounter was about 100000 km.
Nucleus of Halleys Comet taken by Vega 2 had a close encounter at 8030 km.
Unusual magnetic waves were recorded near Comet Grigg-Skjellerup
Ulysses Encounter with Comet Hyakutake Ulysses unexpectedly encountered the tail of Comet Hyakutake on May 1, of 1996 at a time when the nucleus was close to the Sun, more than 3. 5 AU During an unplanned rendezvous, the Ulysses spacecraft found itself gliding though the immense tail of Comet Hyakutake, revealing that comet tails may be much, much longer than previously believed, more than 3 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Observations revealed ions of cometary origin, and changes in magnetic field direction typical of cometary tails. Further information is at http: //ulysses. jpl. nasa. gov/press
The spacecraft Stardust flew within 236 km of the comet Wild 2
Comet 9 P/Tempel 1 • Comet 9 P/Tempel 1 was discovered on April 3, 1867 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel of Marseille, France while visually searching for comets. The comet was then 9 th magnitude and described by Tempel as having an apparent diameter of 4 to 5 arcmin across. Later calculations revealed that the comet had been situated 0. 71 AU from the Earth and 1. 64 AU from the sun at that time.
The features in comet Borrelly's coma, dust jets, and nucleus. Borrelly's nucleus is about 8 kilometers Deep Space 1 was launched on October 24, 1998.
Nucleus of Halleys Comet taken by Vega 2 had a close encounter at 8030 km.

Radar observations made by Arecibo Observatory in 1980 indicated a radius of 0. 4 to 4. 0 km. Tempel 1 - Planned flyby and projectile impact by the Deep Impact mission in 2005. Borrelly - Target of Deep Space 1 spacecraft in 2001.
Giacobini-Zinner - Target of ICE flyby on 11 Sep 1985 within 7800 km. Grigg-Skjellerup - Target of Giotto flyby (within 200 km) on 10 July 1992. Crommelin - Subject of 1984 test of the IHW network.
