Timeline • July 16 1969 – takeoff from Kennedy Space Station • Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin Jr. , Michael Collins • July 19 – Enter Lunar Orbit • July 20 – Lunar Module separates from Command Module – Armstrong and Aldrin leave command center • Armstrong takes first step onto the moon at 10: 56 pm – Aldrin joined him at 11: 11 and they were both off by 1: 11 am • July 22 – Splash landing into pacific ocean

Conspiracy Basis • Filmed on a Hollywood set or in Area 51 • Desperate to beat the Russians • Stanley Kubrick – 2001: A Space Odyssey • Photos and videos only available through NASA, no independent verification • Three Astronauts killed in equipment testing = cover up • 1999 Gallup Poll – 6% of Americans think it was faked – 5% are undecided

Why Conspire? • A conspiracy theory is defined as “a belief that some covert but influential organization is responsible for a circumstance or event. ” • NASA is an influential organization… • The moon landing was an event… • Therefore this is a conspiracy theory because as previously stated 5% of people believe it was staged

Take Your Pick • Light Sources – The only light source on the moon is the sun, right? This should mean that all shadows run parallel but is not the case. NASA tries to say that this is because of the uneven surface.

Take Your Pick • Duplicate Backdrop – Two separate photos from the Apollo 15 mission were claimed by NASA to have been taken miles apart but have the same exact backdrop. – NASA says that since the moon is much smaller than Earth that its horizons can appear more similar to the human eye.

Our Culture • The Moon Landing Conspiracy is obviously a large part of our culture since around 10% of Americans either believe in it or are unsure. • It is one of the more popular conspiracies • Science vs Conspiracy
